You sighed and smiled as you brushed your hair out; today was a special day…no…it was BEYOND special. It was possibly the most important day to you since forever. You looked at the calendar and beamed at the date that was circled and the big red words written there: Berwald and __________'s one year anniversary!
You couldn't believe it…a whole year. It really didn't seem like it. It had flown by almost like magic. You honestly couldn't imagine ever having a better boyfriend; as far as you were concerned it was virtually impossible.
He was so sweet and gentle; always patient and never pushing you for anything. He would do the smallest things for you. It seemed like he could read your mind sometimes. You would come home after a long and frustrating day and find flowers on the front steps to your house. Whenever you needed to talk he would sit there and listen to you for as long as it took. He always loved you no matter what. He loved you when you were smiling happily at him just as much as when you were pissy as hell on your period.
You were so happy with him. Commitment is a big deal but you knew that you never wanted to be away from him. You just couldn't get your mind off of how excited you were for tonight. You were going out with him for something special. How did you know it was special? Because he didn't tell you where you were going. Normally Sweden was a pretty straightforward guy and so by not telling you, it must have meant that he had something planned.
Just as you finished putting on your clothes for the night, you heard a knock at the door. You were shocked when you glanced at the clock. It was only 4:00; he was supposed to be picking you up at 6:00! Was he actually two whole hours early?
Sighing and standing up, you headed for the front door and opened it. You were not expecting who you saw.
"Denmark….ummm hi." You said blinking a couple of times. What was he doing here?
"Hey there __________." He said with a grin. "Mind if I come in?"
"Well actually I'm getting ready for—"
"Your date tonight? Relax. It won't take long." Denmark said, pushing past you and sitting down on your couch.
Jeez…this guy acted like the fucking king sometimes and it pissed you off. Over the span of time you had known Sweden, you had also gotten to know the other Nordics pretty well. Iceland and Norway cracked you up because of that whole brother situation. Finland was just too sweet and like a little bro to you. Denmark was….well he was Denmark. You weren't sure if you necessarily liked or disliked Denmark; all you knew was that he hadn't always been the nicest guy to Sweden.
"So do you need something?" you asked. Sure that may have sounded a bit rude but Denmark never dropped by, so something must have been up. In addition to that he had really been creeping you out lately; it seemed like he had taken an interest in you…
"Yeah actually." He said standing up and stepping in front of you. "I have an offer for you, ___________. Do you know what it is?"
"Well no…what?" you said reluctantly. You weren't sure you really wanted to know.
"Well it's an offer you can't refuse." He said with one of his signature grins, putting a hand on your shoulder.
You instinctively backed up and gave him a look. "Hey! What are you really here for? I'm Sweden's, NOT yours ok? Don't touch me like."
He still grinned at you. "_____________, I want to possess your country. I want you to become a part of me. I want you to be mine…and I want you to break up with Sweden." He said, his voice getting lower with each word.
"What the hell Denmark?! No!" you said storming out of the room.
"You can't say no." Denmark said, following you.
"I already did!" you barked.
Before you could get into your room, Denmark took your wrist, spinning you around.
"If you don't….I'll crush Sweden…" he purred in your ear.
Your eyes widened but you still pulled back, trying to remain confident.
"You couldn't even do that if you wanted to! Sweden is way stronger than you'll ever be Denmark!" you shouted angrily.
You began to feel anxious when Denmark's expression didn't change. He seemed completely unaffected by your words.
"My military is a lot bigger than last time you checked…I've already been infiltrating his country little by little. The idiot doesn't suspect a thing. The minute I decide to attack, he won't be able to fight back; it'll already be too late." He said with a smirk.
Your eyes were wide. "You're lying!"
Denmark wordlessly reached into his pocket and pulled out some photos before handing them to you. You couldn't believe it…these pictures of his military…it was much bigger than when you last checked.
"Breathe a word of this to Sve and I'll crush him." Denmark said.
You teared up. "Wh-why…?"
"Because I want you ___________...I have a real interest in you." The blonde purred.
You only stared at your feet.
"I want you to be mine…" he breathed in your ear.
You shivered in discomfort. "I…I don't want to!"
Denmark shrugged. "I understand. I guess I'll be off to destroy Sweden then."
"No!" you cried, grabbing his arm.
He turned to you and smirked.
"I…I…I'll be yours…I don't care. Just don't do anything to him. Don't do anything! Please!" you begged.
Denmark grinned. "I had a feeling you'd cooperate ___________. Now…I'll have my eye on you tonight. I better see you break up with Sweden."
"I'm so excited for you Su-san!" Finland said cheerfully, allowing his friend to finish getting ready. "It's hard to believe that you and ___________ have been together for a whole year! And I'm even more excited that you're going to ask her…" the cheery boy said, glancing over at a small velvet box sitting on top of the nearby dresser.
Though Sweden wasn't saying a word, Finland had known him long enough to have an idea of what he was feeling. He could tell that Sweden was actually anxious…well more like nervous as all hell.
"Don't worry Su-san! ___________ will definitely say yes!" Finland said with a bright, reassuring smile.
Though he still bore some anxiety, Sweden did feel slightly calmed by his friends words and with a few more words, he left for your house.
On the way there all he could think about was how much he loved you. He would do anything for you…in his eyes you were perfect. Every part of you from the inside out made his heart pound. You were the only one who had ever and would ever make him feel that way…he needed you.
Arriving at your doorstep, Sweden had never found himself so anxious in his life. He never really got tense or uptight about anything but this time was important….
Finally after a deep breath, Sweden reached out and knocked on your door. When you answered, Sweden's heart pounded; you looked so beautiful….everything about you was perfect tonight. For some reason, everything about you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, inside and out, was absolutely perfect in his eyes right now.
"H-hi Berwald…" you said quietly.
Sweden made a small sound of acknowledgement to your greeting, before taking your right hand. "You look beautiful."
You smiled at him; a fake smile…. 'Don't say that to me!' you thought painfully.
Despite your smile, Sweden could read that there wasn't something quite right about you.
"You ok?" Sweden asked, looking at you even more closely than before.
"Yeah, I'm fine! I'm just ready to head out is all." You said smiling again.
"Ok." Sweden said, taking your hand a bit more purposefully, guiding you out of your house.
"So…where are we going?" you asked with some level of distraction.
"I told you it was a surprise." Sweden said wrapping an arm around your waist.
You both shared some light conversation throughout your stroll and during that time, Sweden was inwardly worried and confused. What was wrong with you? It wasn't' like you to be as quiet as you were right now…and you were acting so awkward and strange. You weren't leaning back into his hold or trying to wrap your arms around him…you hadn't kissed him with a smile when you saw him at your doorstep. You had 't even said A WORD about being happy about your one year anniversary.
'Maybe I shouldn't ask today…' Sweden thought to himself, noting the presence of the black velvet box in his pocket.
No…he had decided to do this. He loved you so so so much. Maybe you were just feeling a little shy or something and he wasn't understanding you right. Was he just being oversensitive? That had to be it….you loved him…you always told him that and he knew that you meant it. Tino had given him reassurance too. Yes…you had been together for this long…it would be fine.
"You need to close your eyes." Sweden said to you.
Now this time you couldn't help but smile and giggled despite the pain tearing through your heart.
"Oh?" you said looking into those gorgeous blue eyes of his.
"Close them." He repeated, causing you to shake your head with a laugh before closing your (color) eyes.
You gasped quietly when you felt Sweden's strong, careful hands settle on your body, guiding you due to your lack of vision. It felt so good…so perfect. Sweden's powerful yet loving hold on your body….this was the man you wanted to be with forever. God you wanted to cry…..
"Here." Sweden stated bluntly, rubbing your side a bit before taking his hands away.
After a few moments of thought you opened your eyes…you nearly cried at the sight. It was where you had first met.
"Berwald…" you said quietly, a smile gracing your features as you walked around a bit, simultaneously taking a trip down memory lane.
Sweden couldn't help but allow for a small smile of his own. You really did look happy. Yes…he had definitely been wrong before about you acting odd. You were just fine and now was the perfect time to tell you.
Sweden silently fished in his pocket for that anxiety inducing bit of jewelry before making his way over to you. God you looked beautiful…he just loved you so much…so much it hurt sometimes.
Sweden began to open his mouth to speak but was cut off by you.
"Berwald…we need to talk." You said quietly, not looking at him.
"Something wrong?" Sweden asked, placing a hand on your shoulder, which you quickly pulled away from him.
Sweden looked a bit shocked. Why were you acting this way?
"_______________?" Sweden asked, placing his hand on your shoulder once more.
"Don't touch me!" you cried with tears suddenly staining your cheeks as you jerked away from him.
Sweden's eyes had widened just a bit. What was going on? Everything had been perfect….
"B-Berw-….Sweden…" you choked, changing from his name to simply his country's name. "I…I don't want to be with you anymore…" you coughed. "W-we're…we're not in love anymore…"
"What?" Sweden said finally.
"I….d-don't make me say it again!" you sobbed. "I just don't think we should be together Sweden! I….I want to b-break up."
Now, even though Sweden's posture and face stayed the same for the most part, his eyes had filled with hurt and sadness. Was this for real? On your one year anniversary? But…you had looked so happy only a moment ago! This wasn't how it was supposed to be! He was going to ask you to marry him!
"_______________...." Sweden said quietly, reaching out and cupping your cheek. "Why?"
God why?! Why did he have to look at you with those eyes?! Those eyes that could make you break no matter what. Why did he have to speak to you so gently even though right now all he should be doing was yelling at you for being a bitch.
"I just…" you choked.
"What's wrong ___________?" Sweden soothed.
Why?....why was he doing this for you? Even though you had done nothing right now but to make him angry, he was still caring for you and trying to help you!
"I just….I just……" you stammered, tears continuing to stream down your cheeks. "G-goodbye!" you sobbed, shoving Sweden away. "I don't wanna be with you anymore! We're done!"
And with that you ran…you ran away. You left the love of your life standing alone at the place where you first met; ON your one year anniversary….you left him standing there with a beautiful engagement ring still hidden.
You cried your eyes out all the way home. You didn't bother even taking off your shoes when you burst into your house, ran upstairs, and threw yourself onto your bed screaming and crying. This was the worst pain you had ever felt in your entire life…it was like the only thing that had ever mattered to you…the only thing that made your life worth anything, had been taken away from you…
"I knew you'd do it." A cocky voice said from behind you.
"GO AWAY!!!" you screamed in tears.
"You did the right thing ____________." Denmark said. "You were being a sweet little girl and protecting your boyfriend; well…EX-boyfriend." The blonde finished, putting extra emphasis on the "ex".
"J-just leave me alone!" you sobbed, still not looking away from the darkness of your pillow.
You could hear the cocky Nordic nation laugh a bit. "I'll see you soon ______________." He said slyly, before making his way out of your home.
Then everything went silent…nobody was there except for you. You were all alone…even the sounds of your sobs had abandoned you…emptiness was your only companion now.
"Berwald…" you choked softly before drifting away in a sea of tears…
